On Vox: Entertainment QotW: Oh-So Quotable [Jul. 8th, 2008|12:18 pm]

What movies do you have memorized? Bonus points for sharing your favorite quote.
Submitted by Andymatic.

"Shhh.. Do you smell something"

"They go up"

"That's a big Twinkie"

"It's the StayPuft Marshmallow man"

"Nobody steps on a church in my town"

-----------------------------------------------------------

It's 106 Miles to Chicago. We have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses" "Hit it."

"You got the cheesewhiz boy?"

"Four fried chickens and a coke" "..and some dry, white toast"

"This is glue. Strong Stuff"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"4691 irradiated Haggis"
"No it's a chicken"
"Why break the habbit of a lifetime?"
"It's a garbage pod. It's a smegging garbage pod"
"Unrumble!"
"It's been cleaned"
"What is it?"
"Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas"
"So let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the potato people? And plead with him for your freedom? And you're telling me you're completely sane?"
"I'm an animal. I'm a tasteless, uncouthed, mindless, tone deaf, randy, blokish, semi-literate space bum."

[Actually, the entire lot as classic quotes.. extra points for guessing the episodes]

On Vox: Culture QotW: Play Time [Jun. 19th, 2008|10:32 am]

What's your favorite play and why?

Well I don't really have a favourite play at the moment, although I definitely prefer musicals. I did go and see two musicals (which I thoroughly enjoyed) on the weekend.

Zenophran and I went to Sydney to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney. It was a birthday present from my parents and I'd been looking forward to it for ages.

Phantom was absolutely brilliant, especially seeing it had Anthony Warlow in the lead role. I'd missed out seeing him 10 years ago in Melbourne as Rob Guest had taken over. This time, Anthony Warlow is the Phantom. He is really, really good.  :) One other thing that was much improved since I last saw it was the sound quality. :) They even used surround sound and it was gooooood!!

The other show I got to see was The Rocky Horror Show. I hadn't even realised that it was on at the moment, but when we got to StarCity on friday night, we saw the posters everywhere and just had to get tickets. I have just one comment about that - you got to love a theatre with built-in cocktail glass holders in the chairs!!

Why do you blog?

Act of Treason
Vince Flynn

Submitted by littleduckling.

Right now I'm blogging to distract me from the mountain of study I need to do.

In other news, I got a free book in the mail today. It's not my usual genre, but I'll probably give it a go. Either that or it will go straight to the bookcrossing pile..

On Vox: Campfire night [Jun. 8th, 2008|12:46 pm]
We had a special group night with the scouts tonight.

It is the Queen's Birthday holiday here and it is the one weekend of the year that we are allowed to buy and use fireworks.

This year they even had parachutes for sale!!  The little kids had control of the sparklers and the grownups set off the fireworks for all to see.

All the sections were involved (even the joeys) and everyone had a great time cooking marshmallows around a proper campfire.

On Vox: Fun and Games at the local shops [May. 22nd, 2008|08:21 am]
Was down the shop getting food today, when I noticed a few people scurrying. Next thing I know, there is a  bus rolling forward with no driver and the wheel and it was pretty obvious it wasn't going to stop.

When I came out of the shops, the fire-ys and cops had arrived..

Luckliy there was no one in that part of the building when the bus hit it.
The bus stop is not thereThe Fireys show up

On Vox: Movie Review: The Other Boleyn Girl [Mar. 22nd, 2008|11:33 am]
I've been wanting to see this movie since I heard it was coming out this year.

I knew I would never be able to convince Zenophran to come with me, so I took the opportunity the Easter weekend presented and went to the movies with my mother and two sisters.

I must admit, I was dissapointed.

This movie was supposed to be based on Phillipa Gregory's book. I don't think there was any sign of the content or even tone of the book.

The movie is basically a brief overview of the Duke of Norfolk and Anne Boleyn's ambition. All of which is in the history books.

What is the point of making a film adaptation of a book when you completely cut out the bits about the book that make it unique, and then change the perspective from Mary to Anne.

Another farewell, another cake ..

This time it was my boss. We really don't want her to leave, but she is retiring, so we don't have a say in the matter.

On Vox: Some Photos for Today [Feb. 16th, 2008|10:44 am]
Went down to the Scout Hall last week for a leader's planning meeting.
I was early.
Everyone else was late.

So I whipped out the camera and took some shots.
No idea when they painted this, but it's pretty cool.
This is a lump of wood left in the campfire. Makes for a good texture shot.
I think I may be turning into Rimmer
The other self-portrait went so well, I thought I'd take another.

In other news- why can I never seem to find any bookcrossing books. I checked out the latest (dropped a few days ago), but it was already gone. I've yet to find any around Canberra. I'm going to have to keep my eyes more peeled on my travels. :)

On Vox: t's not even Thursday [Feb. 6th, 2008|11:20 am]

/rant ahead. Feel free to ignore/

I don't know what it was about today. Everything was going wrong and I feel like crap.

It might be the weather. It started out with fog and ice and ended up at 30C and humid.
It might even be run down and cranky from binging on junk food.

Or it might be that even 5 minutes someone asks me something they have asked before and expects me to magically fix a major problem. Not even the PhD and experience chemists can fix it (yet). Why ya looking at me for?

Maybe I should go to bed. *dreams about burettes and iodine*

On Vox: Television dilemmas [Feb. 3rd, 2008|11:24 am]

Why do the TV stations always do this to me? Ratings season is starting again and they put all the good shows on at exactly the same time.

Who Do You Think You Are? - based on the UK show of the same name, it traces the family histories of well known Australians. Very interesting. Tonight's was on Cathy Freeman, an Olympic gold medal winning athlete. She is an Australian Aboriginal, so her family would be interesting to trace.

So You Think You Can Dance - The premiere of the Australian version. We've got some good dancers so far. What I don't get is why we need to have 3 UK/US judges. Haven't we got any Australians who can fill one of the judging spots?

Cricket - Yes. Yes. I know. But its a one day game, and it's Australia vs India again. Conflict makes grass growing more interesting.

It was made easier by the fact the cricket kept getting interrupted by rain. I really shouldn't complain about that - we desperately need the rain here!

P.S. In the end I watched Dance, and recorded WDYTYA. It was still raining when they finished and has now been called off..

What's the front page story in your local paper today? What do you think the front page story SHOULD be?

The Canberra Times - January 31, 2008

Other people may have stories on wars and political candidates. We don't. We have a story about how good (read lousy) the new PM is at selecting a cricket team.

Really Important Stuff

On Vox: Technology QotD: Working 9 to 5. Sort of. [Jan. 24th, 2008|07:24 pm]

More and more people are working remotely these days. Does your job allow you to do so? How much face-time do you usually put in at the office during any given week?

I'd love to see me trying to work from home! I'd have to invent teleport first.

I can just see it now ..

Me:       Hi guys, can you just pass the butanone. Yeah, the small bottle. Just put it in the teleport
Them:   OK. I don't think it will fit. How 'bout I just pour some into a beaker for you?
Me:       Oh, alright. Just remember the lid this time. I don't want to have mutated flies again. Now I'm just sending the             radioactive chromatography strips back. Can you just pop it into the gamma counter for me?

eerrr.. I think the answer to that is NO! I do have webmail, so I get to keep an eye on what's going on while I'm supposed to be on holidays.

Today is Saturday. I DO have the day off (and all of next week too)

So what am I doing today. Well sweet FA really. Although I do have to go to the aquarium shop and find out why the stupid goldfish I have had for 2 weeks died.
